Ding Dong Merrily On High

Heartstring Samplery

“When I was asked to design something for a Christmas in July event, it was early in the year, and I was in a bit of a post-holiday funk. I sat staring blankly at my design screen trying to tap back into that festive Christmas spirit I had so recently packed up with my decorations. The very first song that came to mind was “Ding Dong Merrily on High”. I went online to see what I could learn about this classic holiday song, and discovered that the lyrics are by George Ratcliffe Woodward and published the first time in 1924. Woodward loved steeple bells and archaic poetry and purposely used words that fit an older style of writing.

What came from my mind then, was a sampler and a set of ornaments in tribute to the steeple bells and Ding! Dong! from the song. I chose to string my ornaments together to create a bunting, complete with vintage brass jingle bells, but they could also be finished as single ornaments to add to your cross stitched ornament collection. Whatever you decide, I hope that you enjoy a new connection with this old Christmas song as a result of your stitching.”
