Sassafras Samplers

Stitch count: 119w x 140h

Margaret White holds a very special place in my heart, as it was a wedding gift from some dear friends. This sampler was part of the wonderful and magical collection of Lorraine Mootz, and her agreeing to part with it so that my friends could gift it to me was a gift in itself! I love Scottish samplers, and I love Holland, having worked there for several years and lived there for a time in the early 2000s. While this sweet sampler is certainly Scottish, it features a wonderful Dutch tulip and windmill, tying it back to Holland. I imagine Margaret stitched her father as the shepherd; perhaps he was a Scotsman married to a beautiful young Dutch girl, and their love, signified by the hearts on the sampler, produced Margaret White. Or something like that! There were too many Margaret Whites born in Scotland at the right time to narrow it down much, but Margaret left us some lovely clues in her sampler. I hope this sweet sampler brings you a few moments to celebrate the love and friendship in your life.

Margaret’s sampler contains cross stitch over 2 threads, some compensating cross stitches noted in the chart, and a few straight stitches. We recommend Weeks Dye Works Straw on a Zweigart base or Legacy Linen Pecan Shortbread in 30ct. We have provided both a color and a black & white version of the chart.
